We all know, internal applications get looked at first. Then, if there are any positions left, external applications will be considered. As an external applicant, your resume and cover letter MUST be perfect. Your pieces of paper need to scream out “pick me!” This takes time and effort.

Every cover letter should be customized to the institution. Using the same cover letter for multiple hospitals will be noticeable and cause your application to be overlooked. Use your cover letter to tell the institution about yourself. Don’t go too in depth but touch on why you value the institution and how you would add to it. Close with which unit you desire most. Sign your cover letter and provide your contact number.

Your resume must also be customized to the institution. Be concise and complete. Ensure that everything fits on one page! Breakdown your resume into Objective, Nursing Education, Clinical Rotations, Related Healthcare Experience, and Professional Affiliations. Provide hours, location, and timing completed in your Clinical Rotations section. Within your Capstone, speak to what you were responsible for. Make sure that if you are applying to the ICU, that the words “ICU” appear somewhere on your resume. Some computer-generated application screening programs will use a search function to see if what you applied for is in your resume. If not, you won’t be considered.
