We all know, internal applications get looked at first. Then, if there are any positions left, external applications will be considered. As an external applicant, your resume and cover letter MUST be perfect. Your pieces of paper need to scream out “pick me!” This takes time and effort.
Every cover letter should be customized to the institution. Using the same cover letter for multiple hospitals will be noticeable and cause your application to be overlooked. Use your cover letter to tell the institution about yourself. Don’t go too in depth but touch on why you value the institution and how you would add to it. Close with which unit you desire most. The new standard is to provide nursing portfolios at your interviews. This requires your’s to stand out amongst the others. I purchased 1/2 inch binders and plastic sleeves. I used my label maker to title the dividers. My portfolios were customized to each hospital I interviewed for. Anything I provided for the online application was printed and placed in my portfolio.
